Smoke and Soot Cleanup

5/26/2022 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and Soot Facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of La Puente/City of Industry West will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints/varnishes, and has an extreme pungent odor.

SERVPRO of La Puente/City of Industry West Knows What to do if Mold Grows in Your Home

5/19/2022 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold can cause health effects.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of La Puente/ City of Industry West to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at (626)330-1027

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of La Puente/City of Industry West for mold remediation services.

Follow These Mold Safety Tips If You Suspect Mold!

5/12/2022 (Permalink)

If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. Be careful! Without proper training, you can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your home. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic mold spores which become airborne and can circulate inside your home.

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of La Puente/City of Industry West for mold remediation services.

What Not to Do:

  • Don’t touch or disturb the mold.
  • Don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth.
  • Don’t attempt to dry the area yourself.
  • Don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

Does Your Home Have A Mold Problem?

5/11/2022 (Permalink)

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Thunderstorms can pop up at any moment. Contact SERVPRO of La Puente/City of Industry West if you experience any damage.

5/17/2021 (Permalink)

lightning Why Thunderstorms Fall Into the Severe Weather Category

When we think about severe weather, we don’t often think about thunderstorms. But maybe we should.

While most thunderstorms don’t cause significant problems, the fact remains that they can be dangerous, if conditions are right. In some cases, thunderstorms contain winds, lightning, hail, flooding and other issues, meaning there are many ways that the weather can turn dangerous quickly.

What is a thunderstorm exactly? Well, it’s a storm containing thunder. By extension, that also means the storm includes lightning, since thunder and lightning always go hand-in-hand. You may not realize it, but you can’t have one without the other.

What makes a thunderstorm severe? There are a couple conditions that must be met. Severe thunderstorms are defined as storms that contain hail that is one inch or larger and straight-line winds of 58 miles per hour or more.

The Facts About Thunderstorm Danger

Damage and injury from lightning strikes. Thunderstorms always produce lightning, and lightning strikes are among the most dangerous elements of a storm. In fact, it is reported that they cause around 300 injuries every year. Beyond this danger to humans, lightning strikes can also cause significant property damage, including damage caused directly by a strike, as well as damage caused indirectly through things like trees falling on the home.

Property damage due to hail. When you see hail in the forecast, odds are you fear for your car. But while hail can definitely do damage to cars, that’s not the only danger it causes. These ice pellets range in size from tiny to pretty large, and the larger they are, the more damage they can cause. In a severe thunderstorm, large hail can pummel a roof and damage the siding on a home, leading to a leak and water damage.

Harm from flash flooding. You’ve probably learned this at some point in life, but if there’s water on the ground, it’s best not to drive through it. The phrase “turn around, don’t drown” is used for a reason. Flash floods can literally occur in a flash, caused by anything that leads to a mass accumulation of water. If flash flood conditions are possible, it’s best to stay off the road.

Thunderstorms are dangerous and can cause significant damage to homes or commercial spaces. If you have damage due to a thunderstorm, you can count on us to help. Contact us 247 for more information about our storm restoration practices.

The CDC encourages cleaning of high-touch surfaces such as counters, tabletops, doorknobs, light switches, bathroom fixtures, toilets, phones, keyboards, tablets, and tables. Other spaces mentioned in the CDC’s guidance for commercial spaces include:

  • Kitchen/Food Areas
  • Bathrooms
  • Schools/Classrooms
  • Offices
  • Retail Spaces
  • Water Fountains
  • Shelving/Racks
  • Sales Counters
  • Carpets and Rugs

Ways Business Owners Can Lower Their Fire Risk | SERVPRO® of La Puente/City of Industry West

2/25/2020 (Permalink)

If you own your own business, you understand how many elements there are to plan for—but have you planned for emergency scenarios such as fires? Commercial fires can start for many reasons, and for those who are not prepared, they can be devastating. Planning ahead to reduce the risk of a fire on your property can go a long way in protecting your investment.

To make the planning process as easy as possible, we have compiled a list of the essential tips for fire safety that every business owner should know. By taking these simple measures, you can greatly increase preparedness at your business and reduce your time for recovery, as well.

Follow code guidelines and inspection schedules. Checking up on commercial fire safety codes is a great first step toward your business’ fire preparedness efforts. These codes are set up by the National Fire Protection Association and cover things such as fire exits, equipment inspections and other precautions you can take within the workplace to be prepared.

Identify your specific risks. Depending on your industry, you may have additional fire risks specific to your business. Things like special equipment, cooking surfaces, chemicals and more can all contribute to your likelihood of a fire and should be built into your fire safety planning for best results.

Create (and practice) a fire evacuation plan. For businesses with on-site staff, taking time to plan and practice a fire escape is essential to fire safety plans. When the fire alarm sounds, confusion can quickly turn to panic if the staff is unprepared. Make sure everyone is aware of the exits throughout the building and where to reconvene for a headcount outside.

Have regular fire safety seminars with staff. In addition, to escape drills, general fire safety tips should also be reviewed with staff frequently. Indicating the storage location of fire extinguishers, proper use of the equipment and other fire hazards around the building, and any other relevant information pertinent to fire safety will keep both new hires and experienced staff educated and prepared.

If your business has experienced a fire, we’re here 247 to respond and begin restoration. Call us today to learn how we can help you.

fireplace Keep These Top Fire Safety Tips in Mind | SERVPRO® of La Puente/City of Industry West

Fire safety is a chief concern for many individuals, and for good reason. House fires occur quite frequently for a variety of reasons and can lead to extensive property damage as well as injuries and fatalities for those who experience them.

Because of this, being aware of fire safety tips is one of the best things to do to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. After seeing many house fires throughout our years in the restoration industry, we decided to put the top fire safety tips in one place to help you be prepared.

Tips About Fire Safety You Need to Know

Frequently Check Smoke Detectors. Installing and maintaining a smoke alarm system for your home is one of the most important things to do to increase fire safety. It is recommended that a smoke detector be placed in every room of the home and that you do a test each month to make sure the batteries are charged.

Have a Fire Escape Plan. In the event of a sudden fire, having an evacuation plan for the household is key. By designating two exits from each room and an outdoor meeting place for your family, you can ensure that everyone can get out safely and reconvene quickly while you await aid.

Know How to Operate a Fire Extinguisher. There are many types of fire extinguishers to choose from, so it is advised to get the type you think will be most suited to your needs. Make sure you fully understand how to use it and share the information with your family members, as well.

Never Leave Flames Unattended. Open flames are a part of everyday life—between cooking, heating our homes and enjoying candles, there are many opportunities for flames to grow out of hand. A small fire can spread in an instant, which is why no open flame should ever be left unattended within the home.

Keep a Closed-Door Policy. Fires at night are quite common and tend to be more fatal than those that happen while residents are awake and alert. Fortunately, simply keeping bedroom doors shut at night can reduce the risk of a fire fatality dramatically, as it slows the spread of flames and provides more reaction time to those in the house.

If you’d like to learn more about protecting yourself from a house fire and how our restoration services can help you recover, get in touch today to learn more.

Snow on tree Reasons for Winter Fires

Preventing fires is always a wise safety measure to undertake, but brushing up on your fire facts in the winter is especially wise. Even in areas that do not experience extreme cold, winter is the most common time for house fires and it is important to know the why and how of preventing them.

Reasons for Winter Fires

An Increase in Cooking
Fires are most often caused by cooking incidents during any season, but the conditions in the winter months make them especially likely to start. Because many people cook each day, it can be easy to fall into unsafe patterns that can lead to a fire’s beginnings.

The Risk of Heaters
Even in mild winter weather, having a way to generate heat can be nice, as long as it is done safely. The second most common cause of winter fires is unsafe heating practices. Making sure to invest in portable heaters with safety features and keeping flammable items away from a fireplace or woodstove will reduce the likelihood that an accident could happen.

Candles and Decorations
Holiday decorations can bring about a festive air, but not every decoration is safe. Many electrical decorative pieces are only used once per year, causing their electrical components to deteriorate and cause a fire hazard. Additionally, candles always pose an increased fire risk as it is possible for the flame to travel to other nearby objects.

Preventing Winter Fires

The frequency of winter fires makes prevention all the more important during the shorter days. Understanding why fires are caused most frequently in the winter and taking note of these fire prevention tips is the best way to keep your household safe:

  • Check smoke alarms once every 30 days and replace every 10 years.
  • Always monitor open flames.
  • Select space heaters with automatic shut-offs in case they tip over.
  • Utilize a screen every time you use a fireplace.
  • Draft and practice an emergency escape plan with your household.

If your home has been impacted by a fire, call us right away. We are leaders in restoration and can help you recover quickly after a fire occurs.

Having a team on your side after a disaster can help relieve stress. SERVPRO of La Puente/City of Industry West is here to help when a fire strikes.

House Fire Residential fire

Fire preparedness is a year-round skill to hone, but it should receive extra focus and attention during the winter when the chances of fires are raised. The Red Cross reports that December and January are peak months for house fires, and as winter approaches, checking up on your preparedness is advised.

In case a house fire breaks out, every family member should have the fire evacuation plan memorized to get to safety. After the flames are extinguished, already having an idea of what restoration company to call can help your restoration move much more quickly so you can have your home back as soon as possible.

Our Thorough Fire Cleanup Process

An important part of getting over the traumatic event of a house fire is establishing a sense of normalcy again, which can happen much more quickly when your home and belongings are back to their pre-fire state. That is why we provide a thorough cleanup process following a fire, so we can handle all elements of damage and restore things well for your family.

Structural Cleaning

Proper restoration of the structure is essential to the longevity of your home, which is why we start out with thorough tests to get a full picture of what is damaged. Once we determine what needs to be restored, our technicians begin cleaning the soot-covered surfaces and removing charring, then start the reconstruction process to ensure your home is still stable.

Content Cleaning

We understand the hassle of replacing all your belongings, and it is generally more expensive as well. That is why we have both wet and dry cleaning equipment so we can restore your items and ensure they are not dangerous to use following a fire. Our advanced equipment allows us to handle a variety of objects such as wood furniture, area rugs and electronics, plus many more.

Deodorization Services

Smoke odors and soot can persist even after other fire restoration has been completed, leading to extreme consequences for your family’s health. By bringing in air foggers and scrubbers, we can remove all of these harmful particles—not only getting rid of the odor but making sure your home is safe as well.

Get to Know Your Restoration Company | SERVPRO® of La Puente/City of Industry West

The aspects of property damage are complex, but when damages happen to your small business, it adds an extra layer of complications. FEMA has reported that over 40% of businesses do not reopen following a disaster.

Because business property damage puts owners’ livelihoods on the line, reopening as quickly as possible is advised in order to continue operations. Working with a reputable commercial restoration company is extremely valuable for this, but it is important that you choose one that will do the job well. Here are some questions we recommend for getting to know your restoration company:

1. How Are “After Hours” Emergencies Handled?

In most cases, treating damage quickly is the best way to ensure it does not become too severe. Knowing how a company will respond to emergencies at every hour of the day will ensure that when you discover damage, you are getting serviced quickly regardless of the time.

Because we’re equipped with a 247 emergency line, we do not have a distinct “after hours” to worry about. This enables us to take action as soon as business owners report damage, so they are able to get back to focusing on other tasks that must be done for business recovery.

2. How Are Technicians Trained?

Having quality work performed on your business is essential to reopening, so it is important to know how the technicians who will be working on the property have been trained. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets guidelines on restoration standards and should be the foundation of training.

Our technicians are trained according to IICRC standards, but they are also provided with ample opportunity to continue their education through online courses and certification. This is our way of ensuring they are the most knowledgeable they can be regarding restoration work.

3. How Are Pieces of Equipment Chosen?

The restoration industry has received a multitude of advancements due to recent technological developments, making it more important than ever to choose updated and recommended equipment.

Our equipment is chosen based on the IICRC recommendations, ensuring our machinery is top-of-the-line. Any type of property damage is best treated with the best tools, so this is our way of helping to ensure your business will get back up and running quickly.

If you’re in need of commercial restoration, do not hesitate to make the call so you can get your business back faster, "Like it never even happened. Our professional, courteous, trained experts are here to help 24/7—contact us today. (626)-330-1027.

The Basics About Lightning and Thunderstorms | SERVPRO® of La Puente/City of Industry West

Lightening strikes in the sky Dark skies and clouds with lightening in the foreground.

Thunderstorm damage is not always exclusively caused by flooding or high winds. Lightning strikes can pose real dangers as well, in more ways than one.

Every storm is electrically charged, meaning they all have the potential to create lightning. With lightning bolts reaching upward of 500,000 degrees, they can be extremely dangerous and it is important to stay informed.

What Is Lightning?

All thunderstorms carry electrical charges, and lightning is a physical display of that charge, which either strikes across the clouds or toward the ground.

Because the air is a poor conductor, lightning will typically route through an object on its way to the ground in order to experience less resistance. If this object is a building, it can travel through waterways or wiring paths within the structure.

How Does Lightning Cause Damage to a Home?

To protect your house from lightning damage, it is important to know what types of damage it can cause to a home:

Lightning can start fires. When lightning strikes a building, it creates a high risk for fire both due to its temperature and electrical charge. The heat from lightning can cause a fire to start on impact, but it can also damage electrical wires and lead to fires later on as well.

Lightning can damage appliances. Lightning will typically travel through a home’s electrical wiring and can transfer its charge through the wires as well. Any item plugged into the wall can be ruined in a power surge, which is why it’s important to use surge protectors.

Lightning can create shock waves. In the clouds, shock waves are known as thunder, but they can do serious damage once they reach the ground. They are powerful enough to cause foundations to explode and windows to break near a lightning strike site.

If your home has been affected by storm damages or lightning-related fires, give us a call today! (626)330-1027. We are experts in damage cleanup and can restore your damage quickly, "Like it never even happened".

Sneaky Places for Water Damage to Hide | SERVPRO® of La Puente/City of Industry West

Water leaking from unknown source Close up of grey tile flooring at baseboard with a small puddle of water leaking from an unknown source.

Severe weather is not the only thing to be on guard for when it comes to water damage. There are many causes of water to accumulate in a home, some of which are not weather-related at all.

Because many types of water damage can be hidden, it can also be costly. Many insurance policies do not accept water damage claims, and for ones that do, a typical claim is almost $7,000. Knowing the sneaky places water damage likes to hide will be helpful in avoiding a costly repair.

Sneaky Places for Water Damage to Hide

  • Beneath the sink. The cabinets underneath a sink hide unsightly piping, but they can also hide small leaks that can lead to big water damages.

  • Where the tub meets the wall. The caulk that seals a tub to the wall can decay over time, leading to a seal that allows moisture through.

  • Behind drywall. Drywall’s entire purpose is to hide the structural elements of a home, but it can also hide water damage to those structures.

  • On the roof. Seals around chimneys and vents on the roof can deteriorate, allowing water to seep in each time it rains.

  • In the interior of an HVAC unit. The condensation accumulated by AC units is typically drained away, but if this process becomes damaged, it can begin to drain inside the unit instead.

  • Underneath appliances. Dishwashers and laundry machines may not get moved much and can be hiding water damage underneath them.

  • Near exterior faucets. Faucets mounted in siding or masonry can make it difficult to discover when a leak starts, so they often will not be discovered until damage is severe.

If your home has suffered water damage (even in a hidden place like one of these), we are happy to help! Give us a call right away, (626)330-1027. and we’ll get there quickly, leaving your home "Like it never even happened."
