Severe weather is not the only thing to be on guard for when it comes to water damage. There are many causes of water to accumulate in a home, some of which are not weather-related at all.
Because many types of water damage can be hidden, it can also be costly. Many insurance policies do not accept water damage claims, and for ones that do, a typical claim is almost $7,000. Knowing the sneaky places water damage likes to hide will be helpful in avoiding a costly repair.
Sneaky Places for Water Damage to Hide
Beneath the sink. The cabinets underneath a sink hide unsightly piping, but they can also hide small leaks that can lead to big water damages.
Where the tub meets the wall. The caulk that seals a tub to the wall can decay over time, leading to a seal that allows moisture through.
Behind drywall. Drywall’s entire purpose is to hide the structural elements of a home, but it can also hide water damage to those structures.
On the roof. Seals around chimneys and vents on the roof can deteriorate, allowing water to seep in each time it rains.
In the interior of an HVAC unit. The condensation accumulated by AC units is typically drained away, but if this process becomes damaged, it can begin to drain inside the unit instead.
Underneath appliances. Dishwashers and laundry machines may not get moved much and can be hiding water damage underneath them.
Near exterior faucets. Faucets mounted in siding or masonry can make it difficult to discover when a leak starts, so they often will not be discovered until damage is severe.
